Mubarak Wife Released After Handing Over Assets

Suzanne Mubarak, wife of ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak

Ousted president Hosni Mubarak's wife was released today after handing over her assets to the Egyptian state.

Suzanne Mubarak had been held on corruption charges in a hospital of the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, along with her husband, who is also being investigated for allegedly ordering the shooting of antiregime protesters.

The justice ministry said in a statement that it has decided to release her after she handed over 24 million Egyptian pounds ($4 million) to the state.

Meanwhile, Mubarak, 83, is reportedly preparing to hand over his assets and apologize to the Egyptian people in return for an amnesty from the military rulers who took power when he was overthrown on February 11.
