A NATO official says the alliance does not expect the use of Russian territory to transport supplies used by Western forces in Afghanistan to be affected by NATO’s suspension of cooperation with Moscow.
In response to a query from RFE/RL, the official said the transit of International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) supplies is not overseen by the NATO-Russia Council but by Russia and commercial cargo transport companies.
The official said that therefore “the use of Russian territory for the transit of ISAF supplies is not affected” by NATO’s decision to suspend practical cooperation with Russia in the NATO-Russia Council and other official bodies.
The official said an ITAR-TASS report suggesting that cargo transport through the Russian "northern supply line" would be halted was “not accurate.”
