The U.S. Navy says a sailor who was shot in an attack on U.S. military-related facilities in Tennessee has died, raising the death toll to five people.
The Navy said in a July 18 statement that a male petty officer died of wounds sustanined two days earlier in the attack, which a U.S. federal prosecutor in Tennessee says is being treated as an act of “domestic terrorism.”
The suspected shooter, Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez, a Kuwaiti-born naturalized U.S. citizen, was shot and killed in a firefight after the July 16 rampage at a military recruiting office in the city of Chattanooga and at a nearby training center.
The U.S. Marine Corps confirmed earlier that four marines were killed in the attack, which President Barack Obama called "heartbreaking."
U.S. authorities are examining the suspect’s potential ties to Islamist militants. They say Abdulazeez traveled to Jordan and possibly other countries in the Middle East for several months last year.
