New EU Envoy To Central Asia Appointed

BRUSSELS -- Hungarian career diplomat Janos Herman has been named the new European Union Special envoy for Central Asia.

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton appointed Herman for a six-month period. His job will start immediately.

In a press release on April 9, Ashton said Herman is "an experienced diplomat and I am looking forward to working with him in his new role."

Herman replaces Germany's Patricia Flor who had held the position for two years and recently returned to Berlin for a position within the German Foreign Ministry.

Herman recently worked as a senior official at the European External Action Service (EEAS), which serves as a foreign ministry and diplomatic corps for the EU.

He previously headed the EU delegation to Norway, worked as a Hungarian state secretary of foreign affairs, and was the country's ambassador to NATO.
