The White House says the security transition in Afghanistan was discussed during a phone call between U.S. President Barack Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
The call April 9 came after Karzai two days previously condemned a NATO air strike in Kunar Province that Afghan officials said killed 11 children.
A White House statement said Obama and Karzai discussed progress in the transition of security responsibilities to Afghan forces as NATO-led combat troops move toward withdrawing from Afghanistan by the end of 2014.
According to the statement, Obama and Karzai also discussed preparations for Afghanistan's 2014 elections.
It said Obama also welcomed Karzai's recent talks with the emir of Qatar on the possibility that the Taliban could open an office in the Persian Gulf state to facilitate Afghan reconciliation talks.
