White House sources say U.S. President Barack Obama is to meet top congressional leaders October 2 to urge them to reopen the government and to agree to raise the U.S. debt ceiling.
The meeting comes as a partial government shutdown entered a second day.
According to reports, Obama will urge the House to pass a "clean" bill to re-open the U.S. government.
Earlier, Obama reportedly said he would veto any "piecemeal" legislation that would restore funding only for certain parts of the government.
He will also urge Congress to pass a bill lifting the government's $16.7 trillion debt ceiling, without which the government could run out of money to pay its bills by mid-October. Such a scenario could trigger a debt default for the first time in U.S. history.
