U.S. President Barack Obama has welcomed home some of the last U.S. troops from Iraq, marking a symbolic end to the nearly nine-year-long war.
Speaking to soldiers at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Obama said he wanted to highlight "a historic moment in the life of our country and our military."
"As your commander in chief, on behalf of a grateful nation, I am proud to finally say these two words," Obama said, "and I know your families agree: Welcome home! Welcome home! Welcome home!"
On December 13, Obama said the war would in total cost more than $1 trillion. Ending the Iraq war fulfills a promise that helped Obama win the presidency in 2008.
The Iraq war killed more than 4,500 U.S. troops.
