Actor Omar Sharif Dies Aged 83

Egypt-born Actor Omar Sharif, best known for his roles in classic films such as Lawrence Of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago, has died aged 83.

His agent said on July 10 that Sharif suffered a heart attack in a Cairo hospital, adding that the actor had been in a hospital for patients with Alzheimer's disease.

Born Michel Shalhoub in Alexandria in 1932, Sharif studied at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

He made his screen debut in a 1954 Egyptian film and rapidly became a star in his country.

Sharif was propelled to global stardom playing Sherif Ali, an Arab tribal leader, in David Lean's 1962 World War I drama Lawrence Of Arabia.

He won two Golden Globe awards and an Oscar nomination for the role.

Sharif won another Golden Globe three years later for his role as Doctor Yury Andreyevich Zhivago, a physician caught up in the Russian Revolution, in Lean’s epic Doctor Zhivago.
