In the United States, a gunman opened fire inside a classroom at a community college in southern Oregon, killing nine people before being shot dead by police.
The killer used four guns, including a type of assault rifle, in the classroom attack, the CNN news station said. Seven people were also wounded at the Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, a town of about 20,000 people.
One survivor said the killer demanded his victims state their religion before he started shooting.
Reacting to the news, President Barack Obama said the United States had made a "political choice" to allow mass shootings, and strongly criticized the main pro-gun lobby group in the country, the National Rifle Association.
The gunman was identified as Chris Harper-Mercer.
Mercer lived in a nearby apartment complex, which was cordoned off with yellow tape after the shooting on October 1.
Police were not saying whether they knew of any motive.
