Pakistani Election Candidate Escapes Suicide Bombing

An election candidate has escaped injury after a suicide bombing in southern Pakistan.

Police said a suicide bomber on a motorcycle blew himself up near the car of Mohammad Ibrahim Jatoi in Sindh Province's Shikarpur district on May 1.

Only the bomber died in the blast, which wounded two passers-by. Jatoi, from the National People's Party (NPP), was campaigning ahead of the May 11 general elections.

The NPP is most active in the provinces of Sindh and Punjab.

More than 40 members of one of the country's main secular parties, the Awami National Party (ANP), have been killed since the campaign season opened in April.
