U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has met with Pakistan's newly-elected Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in Islamabad.

It is Kerry's first trip to Pakistan since the country's new government came to power after elections in May.

Kerry is also meeting with other top political an military officials

A State Department statement said Kerry's talks "will focus on a wide range of topics including promoting security, strengthening the Pakistani economy, and reinforcing people-to-people ties between the United States and Pakistan."

Bilateral relations between the two countries have often been strained, particularly regarding Afghanistan.

Washington is hoping that Islamabad can play a positive role in reviving the stalled reconciliation process between the Taliban and the Afghan government.
