Drone Strike Kills Five Militants In Pakistan's North Waziristan Tribal Area

Pakistani security officials say a U.S. drone attack on a militant compound in a restive Pakistani tribal area killed at least five militants on August 6.

The drone strike took place in Lawra Mandi area of Datta Khel in the North Waziristan tribal area that borders Afghanistan.

Pakistan’s military launched offensive operations in North Waziristan in 2014 against Taliban militants and Central Asian fighters from the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU), who have declared allegiance to the Islamic State militant group.

North Waziristan has been a hub for Al-Qaeda, IMU, and Taliban militants who fled there in the early 2000s after Afghanistan’s Taliban regime was toppled in late 2001.
