Militant Group Says It Holds Pakistani Ex-PM's Son

Ali Haider Gilani, son of former Pakistani Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, was running for a provincial assembly seat.

ISLAMABAD -- A little-known Pakistani militant group says it is holding the kidnapped son of Pakistan's former prime minister, Yousaf Raza Gilani.

A spokesman for the group, the Al-Mansurin Brigade, told RFE/RL late on August 6 that Ali Haider Gilani is their captive.

He was kidnapped at a political rally in his hometown of Multan, in southern Punjab Province, just two days before Pakistan's May 11 election. He was running for a seat in the provincial assembly.

His personal aide was killed during the May 9 attack and a bodyguard was wounded.

No one had claimed responsibility for the abduction.

The call from the Al-Mansurin Brigade spokesman apparently came from a phone number with Afghanistan's country code.
