Pakistani Interior Minister Chaudry Nisar Ali Khan has announced former President Pervez Musharraf will be put on trial for treason.

Khan said November 17 the government was charging Musharraf under Article 6 of the constitution for declaring a state of emergency in 2007 and suspending the constitution.

The interior minister said the country's Chief Justice would receive a letter from the government on November 18 requesting a tribunal of three high court judges be established to hear the case against Musharraf.

The government will also announce a special prosecutor on November 18.

Musharraf would be the first military ruler tried for treason in Pakistan, which has seen three military coups since it became independent in 1947.
