Pakistan's Former Oil, Gas Chief Arrested In Abu Dhabi

Pakistani officials say the country's fugitive former oil and gas chief has been arrested in Abu Dhabi.

Tauqir Sadiq is accused of embezzling $850 million during his tenure as head of Pakistan's oil and gas regulatory authority between 2009 and 2011.

He fled Pakistan last year.

A spokesman for Pakistan's National Accountability Bureau said that Sadiq could be handed over to Islamabad within days.

Last month, Pakistan's Supreme Court ordered a case to be registered against Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf and other senior members of the main ruling Pakistan People's Party in connection with Sadiq's appointment in 2009 and his escape from the country.

Ashraf was the minister of water and power during the period when Sadiq is accused of taking illegal kickbacks and commissions.
