Heavy Rains Claim Dozens Of Lives In Pakistan

Heavy rains have claimed dozens of lives in Pakistan's northeastern provinces of Punjab and Azad Kashmir.

Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority said on September 5 that at least 35 people had been killed in the two provinces in the previous 24 hours in incidents caused by torrential rains.

At least 50 deaths had been reported by late on September 4, after more than 130 millimeters of rain fell on cities across the region over 48 hours.

Authorities in the city of Rawalpindi issued an alert as river-water levels rose abruptly and began evacuating residents of districts vulnerable to flooding.

Pakistan has suffered deadly monsoon floods for the last four years.

Some 1,800 people were killed in heavy floods in 2010.
