The man who is expected to be Pakistan’s next prime minister says he will end the country’s involvement in the U.S.-led war on terrorism if he is elected.

Nawaz Sharif told the BBC that the move is necessary for peace in Pakistan and the world.

Asked whether he would stop military cooperation with the United States in the war, Sharif told the BBC: "Yes, we have to."

He did not specify whether he would stop all of Pakistan’s military operations against the Taliban and Al-Qaeda.

Pakistan has been part of the U.S.-led war since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, in the United States.

Pollsters say Sharif’s center-right Pakistan Muslim League-N is the most popular party in the country ahead of the May 11 parliamentary elections.
