Man Reportedly Stoned To Death In Pakistan

PARACHINAR, Pakistan -- A security source in Pakistan's Kurram tribal district says a man who tried to elope with a woman has been stoned to death.

Requesting anonymity, local sources confirmed to RFE/RL's Radio Mashaal that the incident happened in a graveyard in the city of Parachinar.

They identified the victim by the single name Nooruddin, and said he was in the Pakistani Army.

The woman in the incident was reportedly unharmed.

The sources told Radio Mashaal that local authorities attempted to stop the killing but failed to convince a hard-line Shi'ite group, Tehrik-e Hussainia Parachinar, to pardon the victim.

The Pakistani military has not commented.

Parachinar's population is predominantly Shi'ite and comes from the Turi and Bangash Pashtun tribes.

Tribal codes sometimes stipulate honor killings for individuals attempting to marry without family approval.
