Son Of Slain Pakistani Governor Abducted

Slain Punjab Governor Salman Taseer

The son of former Pakistan Governor Salman Taseer, who was killed by militants in January for opposing blasphemy laws, has been abducted by gunmen in Lahore.

Police emergency official Syed Mumtaz said four men intercepted Shahbaz Taseer's car, overpowered him at gunpoint, and forcibly put him in their car and sped away.

No one has yet claimed responsibility.

His brother Sheryar Taseer told media the family has been receiving threats from the Taliban and extremist groups.

Nasir Mohmand, a journalist with Geo Television in Lahore, told RFE/RL's Radio Mashaal that the motive was unknown.

"They may be militants or there might be some business dispute or people involved who were unhappy with his father," he said, adding that "some business dispute may also be involved because the family has businesses in Pakistan and Dubai."
