Pakistan's military says it has successfully tested a short-range ballistic missile capable of carrying nuclear and conventional warheads.

The military said that the launch of Hatf-II missile was conducted on March 5 by the Strategic Missile Group, at an undisclosed location.

Military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said the missile can carry strategic and conventional weapons up to a distance of 180 kilometers.

The Pakistani test came one day after the military in Pakistan's neighboring nuclear-armed rival India said it successfully tested a BrahMos supersonic cruise missile that can carry nuclear weapons up to 290 kilometers.

The two neighboring countries have fought three wars since they gained independence from Britain in 1947.
