Pakistan Claims Successful Test Of Nuclear-Capable Missile

Pakistan's military says it has successfully test-fired a medium-range ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear weapon.

The test came less than one week after Pakistan’s neighboring nuclear-armed rival, India, said it had successfully test-launched a new long-range nuclear-capable missile with a range of up to 5,000 kilometers.

Pakistani officials did not disclose the range of the Shaheen 1A missile for the April 25 launch.

The Pakistani military said the missile, which landed in the Indian Ocean, was a new version of the Shaheen-1 with improvements in range and technical aspects.

India and Pakistan, which have fought three wars since independence from Britain in 1947, have routinely carried out missile tests since both demonstrated nuclear weapons capability in 1998.
