Palestinian Government Resigns

Reports say Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad today tendered his government's resignation, months before the Palestinians were scheduled to hold general elections.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmud Abbas was expected to ask Fayyad to retain the post of prime minister that he has held since 2007.

Last week, the Palestinian Authority said it would hold presidential and parliamentary elections by September, but the Hamas militant group ruling the Gaza Strip has rejected this.

The fall of the Palestinian government follows last week's ouster of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to a popular revolt that has set off reform calls throughout the Arab world.
