Putin Courts Peru, Hosting Leader For First Time In History

Russian President Vladimir Putin says cooperation with Peru can help Moscow "get involved" in "interesting and promising processes in Latin America."

Putin spoke at a meeting with Peruvian President Ollanta Humala during the first official visit ever by a Peruvian leader to Russia.

Humala said that 10 bilateral agreements would be signed during his visit.

Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov told reporters earlier on November 7 that the presidents would discuss energy issues, including the possible construction of a nuclear power plant in Peru.

He said Russia's state nuclear corporation, Rosatom, is "ready to help."

Putin has sought to strengthen ties with Latin American states in his third term, and Russia has looked to the region as a source of food products after banning many U.S. and European imports in retaliation against sanctions imposed over Moscow's actions in Ukraine.
