A controversial plan to demolish a historic minaret in the Uzbek city of Andijon has been canceled. More than 700-years old, the minaret is part of a religious complex known as Musalla and was built in the second half of the 13th century. Uzbek officials had planned to replace the structure with a fountain but reversed their decision after local residents and historians expressed outrage. (RFE/RL's Uzbek Service)
