Poland's Foreign Ministry urgently summoned U.S. Ambassador Stephen Mull to "protest and demand an apology" after a top U.S. intelligence official suggested that Poles were accomplices in the Holocaust.
FBI director James Comey made the remarks in an article about the Holocaust published by The Washington Post on April 16.
After meeting with Deputy Foreign Minister Leszek Soczewica on April 19, Mull said he will be contacting the FBI about the situation.
Earlier in the day, Mull said in Polish that Comey's words were "wrong, harmful, and offensive" and didn't reflect the U.S. administration's views.
Nazi Germany occupied Poland and ran death camps there from 1939-45, killing millions of Jews, Roma, and other minorities, as well as other Poles and people from other countries.
Poland is one of the United States' closest European allies, and ties have been strengthened by the conflict in Ukraine and related tensions with Russia.
