Putin, Merkel To Meet At France Event

Russian President Vladimir Putin (right) and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have agreed to meet in France on June 6.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel will meet on the sidelines of this week's commemorations of the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings that eventually led to Allied victory in World War II.

A German government spokeswoman said Merkel and Putin discussed the situation in Ukraine over the telephone on June 3 and agreed to continue the talks on June 6, when both leaders will attend the event in France.

The spokeswoman said the talks would concentrate on measures that could stabilize the situatioin in Ukraine.

The Kremlin confirmed that in France, Putin will meet with French President Francois Hollande and hold talks with British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Putin aide Yury Ushakov said there were no current plans for a one-on-one meeting between Putin and U.S. President Barack Obama.
