Climate Change Affecting European Plant Life

U.S. researchers say climate change is impacting plants found mainly in the mountains of Europe.

In the journal "Science," the researchers said warming temperatures were forcing many plants to migrate to higher altitudes in northern and central Europe.

More worrying, the scientists said, was the number of plant species in the mountainous regions of the Mediterranean either static or in decline.

Climate warming and decreased rainfall in the Mediterranean region in recent decades corresponds perfectly to the decrease in plant life, said George Grabherr, who chairs the Global Observation Research Initiative in Alpine Environments.
