The director of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, John Brennan, has met with Romanian President Traian Basescu in Bucharest.
The U.S. Embassy and the president's office gave no details on the topics of discussion during the talks on June 18.
Brennan's trip comes a day after the secretary of the Russian Security Council, Nikolay Patrushev, met with Basescu and other Romanian officials in Bucharest.
Russian news agencies reported that the two sides discussed foreign politics and security issues, including the deployment of elements of a U.S. antiballistic missile shield in Romania, and the situation in Moldova's breakaway region of Transdniester.
Romania and the United States signed an agreement in 2011 to install missile interceptors at the Deveselu air base in southern Romania to counter potential threats from Iran.
Russia opposes the move.
