Bucharest Police Detain 30 At Romania-Hungary Soccer Qualifier

Police in Bucharest say 30 Romanians were detained at the 2016 European Championship soccer qualifier between Romania and Hungary as supporters of the Romanian team lobbed firecrackers and smoke bombs.

Police used tear gas and evacuated visiting fans from Hungary ahead of the October 11 match, which ended in a 1-1 tie.

Firecrackers and shouting drowned out the Hungarian national anthem just before the match began.

Afterwards, about 800 Hungarian fans also received a police escort to their buses and trains out of the Romanian capital.

Police spokeswoman Irina Dragan said five arrested Romanians have been banned from soccer stadiums for one year.

About 12,000 police and security forces were deployed in and around the stadium in Bucharest.
