Thousands Of Romanian Miners Demand Pay Rise

Around 3,000 coal miners calling for a pay rise blocked a major road in southwestern Romania's Jiu Valley region on March 8, after talks with the country's new government failed.

The protesters are demanding a 150-euro ($198) bonus for high-risk work.

They say the bonus was promised to them by the previous government, which fell in February after nationwide protests against austerity measures.

The miners' average monthly wage is around 650 euros ($862).

Negotiations between a delegation of the miners' union and Economy Ministry officials failed.

The ministry said a new round of talks is scheduled for March 9.

The Jiu Valley, which was home to tens of thousands of miners in the 1990s, now employs fewer than 7,700.
