Romanian Rallies Target Government, President

Thousands of Romanian opposition supporters have rallied in Bucharest to demand the resignation of the government and president.

Police said about 7,000 people took part in the rally, organized by the leftist opposition to press for the resignation of Prime Minister Emil Boc's centrist coalition and his ally, President Traian Basescu.

The opposition meeting followed a week of street demonstrations staged to protest the resignation of a respected health official after a row with Basescu over a controversial health reform.

Police said that several thousand people also gathered today in other Romanian cities and towns.
