Russia's Lavrov Warns Against 'Politicizing' Human Rights

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking in the Belarusian capital, Minsk, said Russia is opposed to politicizing human rights.

Lavrov also said Russia is against applying double standards on the issue.

He warned nations against trying to impose unilateral approaches to human rights.

Lavrov spoke at a meeting of senior officials from the Russian and Belarusian foreign ministries.

Belarus Foreign Minister Uladzimer Makei said those who criticize his country's human rights record are pursuing their own political agenda.

The United States and the European Union have imposed sanctions on Belarus over President Alyaksandr Lukashenka's crackdown on the opposition and civil society.

The Belarusian government says the sanctions violate the UN Charter and international law.
