Russian Consul In Japan Killed In Cliff Fall

A Russian consul-general in Japan has died after falling down a cliff during a volleyball game at a campsite in the northwest of the country.

Police said Vladimir Pushkov, who was stationed at a consulate general in Niigata prefecture, was on a camping trip with colleagues and their families.

An official at Agano police station in Niigata told the AFP news agency that Pushkov “fell down a cliff and hit his head hard when he was chasing after a ball" on May 26.

Vice Consul Roman Kolesnik tried to rescue Pushkov but was hospitalized after he also fell down the cliff and injured his back, the official said, adding that there was no threat to his life.
