Russian Website That Focused On Environmental Problems Shuts Under Pressure

The website was launched in May 2022.

Ivan Zhilin, chief editor of the independent website Kedr (Cedar) that focused on ecological problems in Russia, told RFE/RL on January 8 that the project shut down from January 1. According to Zhilin, the decision was made after people who publicly cooperated with the website started receiving anonymous threats they would be added to the registry of foreign agents. The website was launched in May 2022. In November 2023, the Justice Ministry labeled Kedr a "foreign agent." Zhilin said his several colleagues launched a new ecological project called Smola (Resin).
