Russia Scrambles To Cope With Monster Snowfall

Efforts continued on December 2 to cope with the aftermath of a major snowstorm that struck the Tver, Novgorod, and Leningrad regions of European Russia.

Traffic was backed up for as much as 200 kilometers along the Rossiya federal highway connecting Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Authorities had set up feeding stations along the route to help get food to stranded travelers.

Emergency Situations Minister Vladimir Puchkov was reportedly controlling the recovery efforts and was touring the stricken area by helicopter.

Traffic along the highway, particularly large trucks, was reportedly hampering the efforts of snowplows.

Transportation Minister Maksim Sokolov is in Tver to discuss the situation with local officials.

Bus service between Moscow and St. Petersburg has been canceled.

As much as 40 centimeters of snow fell in Tver on November 30 and December 1.
