Russia’s Defense Ministry says a military bus has crashed into a deep ravine in South Ossetia, killing six Russian officers and injuring 16.
The bus was traveling on a mountainous road in the breakaway Georgian republic of South Ossetia on May 19 when it crashed into the 40-meter-deep ravine.
Russia's Defense Ministry said the officers were traveling from Tskhinvali to their place of work when the brakes on the bus failed.
Moscow sent a plane with military medics to South Ossetia to provide treatment for the injured officers.
Four gravely injured Russian officers were being flown to a Moscow hospital on May 19.
Moscow recognized the breakaway region’s independence after Russia defeated Georgia in a brief war in 2008.
Since then, Russia has maintained a troop presence in South Ossetia.
