Russia's Foreign Ministry says it has summoned the French ambassador in Moscow over the detention of Russian soccer fans during the Euro 2016 tournament.
The French envoy was notified about "discrimination" toward the Russian supporters, the ministry said on June 15, adding that "further fanning of anti-Russian sentiments" could damage relations between the two countries.
Addressing Russia's lower house of parliament, the State Duma, earlier on June 15, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov described the detention of dozens of Russian soccer fans by French police on suspicion of being involved in last week's violence in Marseille as "an absolutely unacceptable incident."
French authorities say police stopped a bus carrying Russian supporters in southern France on June 14 and detained 43 fans.
Separately, authorities in the northern French city of Lille said police detained six Russians suspected of involvement in violence in Marseille.
And police said three other Russians and a Ukrainian are to be expelled following violence in northern France on June 14.
French officials have said some 150 Russians involved in June 11 clashes with English team supporters were "extremely well-trained" and prepared for "ultraviolent action."
