UN Unable To Accept Russian Troop Offer

The United Nations has said it is unable to accept an offer from Russia to send its troops to the Golan Heights.

Russian President Vladimir Putin made the offer earlier on June 7 after Austria said it would recall its troops from a UN monitoring force due to worsening fighting in Syria.

The UN said it could not accept the Russian offer because an agreement between Israel and Syria bars permanent members of the Security Council from the UN observer mission.

Austria provides about 380 of the 1,000-member UN force monitoring a four-decade-old cease-fire between Syria and Israel.

The UN peacekeeping department is asking the other countries in the force -- the Philippines and India -- to provide more troops, while looking into other countries to contribute.
