Russian Police 'Kill Militant' In Kabardino-Balkaria

It has been reported that a police officer in Russia's restive republic of Kabardino-Balkaria in the North Caucasus has killed a suspected militant.

The suspect was identified only as 22-year-old by the name of Berezgov.

Police said Berezgov was killed late on August 21 when he and an associate attacked a policeman.

Local authorities said Berezgov was wanted for murders, attempted murders of police, and illegal weapons trafficking.

Local authorities announced they were launching an antiterrorist operation in two villages on August 22.

Violence between suspected Islamic militants and security forces in Russia's North Caucasus region leaves scores of people dead and injured each year.

The most volatile republics in the region are Chechnya, Daghestan, Ingushetia and Kabardino-Balkaria.
