Retired Formula One racing champion Michael Schumacher remains in critical condition one day after suffering severe brain trauma in a skiing accident.
Schumacher underwent immediate surgery at a hospital in the city of Grenoble on December 29 after arriving in a coma.
Schumacher's fellow athletes, including former Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa, Formula One driver Jenson Button, and retired German tennis star Boris Becker, have used social media to wish him a quick recovery.
Schumacher's wife, Corinna, and his two children are at his side at the hospital, along with Jean Todt, the president of motorsport's governing body, the FIA.
The 44-year-old Schumacher reportedly hit his head on a rock while skiing off-piste in the resort of Meribel in the French Alps.
"Mr. Schumacher arrived at the Grenoble hospital at 12:40 [local time] following a skiing accident that happened in Meribel in the late morning," Jean-Marc Grenier, an official from the Grenoble University Hospital Center, told journalists within hours of Schumacher's arrival. "He was suffering from severe cranial trauma with a coma when he arrived, which required neurosurgery. He is still in critical condition."
Officials at the resort said he was skiing with his 14-year-old son Mick when the accident happened.
His manager said Schumacher was wearing a helmet. He was said to have been conscious when rescuers arrived but later fell into a coma.
Schumacher suffered severe neck and spinal injuries in a motorcycling accident in 2009 in Spain.
Schumacher had initially retired from sports in 2006 but made a comeback in 2010 and raced for three years with Mercedes. He won two world titles with Benetton and five in a row with Ferrari. He retired for a second time at the end of the 2012 season.
He is ranked as the most successful Formula One driver ever, with a record 91 victories.
