Security Operation In East Tajikistan Kills Several Militants

Tajik security forces have conducted an operation in the eastern part of the country, where fighting with militants broke out in September 2010.

Interior Ministry forces raided a building in the mountainous Rasht Valley area where a group of militants were sheltering.

Interior Ministry official Tohir Normatov said Alovuddin Davlatov, a former field commander from the civil war-era Tajik opposition, was among eight people killed in the operation.

Alovuddin Davlatov was one the militant leaders the authorities blame for an ambush on a military convoy in September that left 28 servicemen dead.

About 100 people -- military, militants and civilians -- have been killed in the Rasht area since September.
