Serbian Police Say Afghan National Killed In Migrants' Fight

Serbian police say an Afghan national was killed on July 27 in a fight involving migrants near the border with Hungary.

Two people were injured in the fight between two groups of migrants early in the morning, a police statement said.

Serbia lies on the so-called Balkan route for migrants and asylum seekers hoping to reach the rich countries of the European Union, including Germany and Austria.

Serbia's northern neighbor, Hungary, has started building a fence in a bid to stem an influx of refugees crossing into Hungary from Serbia.

So far this year, Hungary has registered more than 80,000 asylum-seekers, up from 43,000 last year and just over 2,000 asylum applications in 2012.

Most come from Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and African countries.
