Seven Pakistani Troops Killed In Balochistan Militant Attack

Seven members of Pakistan's paramilitary Frontier Corps have been killed in an attack by militants in Balochistan Province, the military says.

The attack came on December 26, according to the December 27 statement, at a checkpoint in Sharig.

"The area has been cordoned off and escape routes have been blocked to apprehend fleeing culprits," the statement said. "A large-scale search-and-clearance operation is in progress."

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

The region, which borders Afghanistan and Iran, has been plagued by sectarian violence, attacks by Islamist militants, and a separatist insurgency that has produced thousands of casualties since 2004.
