KANDAHAR, Afghanistan -- At least three civilians were killed and six more injured by a car bomb near the southern city of Kandahar on September 14.
Abdul Hameed, the Afghan army commander in the region, said the bomber wanted to target a convoy of NATO troops but detonated explosives hidden inside his vehicle prematurely on a road near Kandahar.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
The insurgents had also claimed responsibility for September 13's attack on the U.S. Consulate in the western province of Herat.
Afghan officials said that two Afghan security forces and an interpreter were killed in the attack. Nine attackers were also killed.
Kandahar is the former Taliban stronghold and spiritual home of hardline movement.
