Georgian prosecutors have filed criminal charges against former President Mikheil Saakashvili.
The Prosecutor-General’s Office said on July 28 that the abuse-of-office charges stem from the breaking-up of antigovernment protests in Tbilisi in November 2007, as well as a raid on and "seizure" of the Imedi television station.
Similar charges have also been filed against several Saakashvili associates who occupied top positions in Georgia in 2007.
The announcement comes after Saakashvili failed to appear at the Prosecutor-General’s Office, where he had been summoned for questioning on July 28.
Saakashvili left Georgia late last year after his second presidential term expired.
The former president wrote on his Facebook account on July 28 that he will "decide himself when to come to Georgia."
