WASHINGTON -- Three Republican U.S. senators have said their private meeting with UN Ambassador Susan Rice failed to satisfy concerns over why she initially attributed the September 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, to spontaneous mob violence instead of a terrorist group.
Senator John McCain of Arizona said the hourlong "candid discussion" left him, Lindsay Graham of South Carolina, and Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire “significantly troubled by many of the answers that we got and some that we didn't get.”
Rice, who met with the three to gain support for her likely nomination by President Barack Obama to succeed Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, says her comments were based on CIA talking points.
The attack left four Americans dead, including Ambassador Chris Stevens.
Republicans have accused the Obama administration of hiding the true nature of the attack for political reasons ahead of the November 6 presidential election.
