Syrian Peace Talks Falter, Cease-Fire Extended In Homs

UN-Arab League envoy for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi

UN-Arab League mediator Lakhdar Brahimi has met with senior U.S. and Russian officials to try to salvage faltering peace talks between the Syrian opposition and the government.

Brahimi met with U.S. Under Secretary of State Wendy Serman and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennadi Gatilov and said they have promised to try break the deadlock.

The talks that began on January 22 were initiated by Washington, which backs the opposition, and Moscow, a key ally of Syria.

Meanwhile, on February 13, the governor of the central Syrian province of Homs has said a cease-fire to allow residents of the besieged city to evacuate has been extended by three days.

The Syrian Red Crescent says 1,500 people have been evacuated from Homs since February 7, when the cease-fire went into effect.
