Minaret Of Landmark Syrian Mosque Destroyed

The minaret of a landmark 12th-century mosque in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo has been destroyed.

The ancient Umayyad Mosque, located in Aleppo's walled Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has been at the center of fierce fighting for months and had already suffered extensive damage.

With Syrian government forces and opposition rebels locked in a stalemate in the flashpoint city of Aleppo, the Sunni mosque has exchanged hands several times.

Syrian state media and opposition groups traded blame on April 24 for the mosque's destruction.

It was the second time in just over a week that a historic Sunni mosque in Syria has been seriously damaged.

Mosques were a launching pad for antigovernment demonstrations at the beginning of the uprising, making many a target for government forces.
