The United Nations and Arab League envoy on Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, is set to return to his mediating role in Syrian peace talks in Geneva, Switzerland.
On January 29, Brahimi said that "the ice is breaking, slowly" but warned that no "substantive" results were expected during the final two days of the internationally backed negotiations.
The current round of Geneva talks is due to conclude on January 31.
Syrian opposition and government representatives said on January 29 that there appeared to have been a small amount of progress in the Brahimi-mediated talks.
Both sides say they’ll examine the "Geneva communique" agreed upon by international powers in 2012.
That document sets out steps to end fighting and urges the establishment of a transitional Syria government until elections can be held.
But while the opposition say Syrian President Bashar al-Assad cannot be part of any transitional administration, Syrian government negotiators insist Assad will not resign from power.
