Syrian Rebels Level Hotel In Massive Aleppo Explosion

Rebels in Syria's northern city of Aleppo have claimed responsibility for a huge explosion near the ancient citadel that rebels say killed some 50 government soldiers.

The Islamic Front rebel alliance posted a message on its Twitter account on May 8 that read, "Our holy warriors this morning blew up the Carlton Hotel barracks in Old Aleppo and a number of adjoining buildings, killing more than 50 soldiers."

The Britain-based opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said rebels dug tunnels under the Carlton Citadel Hotel, which was being used as a base by government forces.

Observatory Director Rami Abdel-Rahman said some 30 people were killed.

Syrian state news agency SANA reported "armed terrorist groups blew up tunnels they had dug under historic buildings leading to major damage."

SANA did not mention any casualties.
